2024 CHOP PERFORMATHON
Performathon for CHOP June 9, 2024 at 2:00pm
The Todd Simmons Piano Studio, along with seven other local piano studios will join forces in raising money to benefit the Trisomy 21 Program at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia on June 9, 2024 at 2:00pm.
Our recital will be one of eight occurring over the weekend of June 8-9, 2024 and will take place at the Peddie School located at 201 South Main Street, Hightstown, NJ.
Where do the donations go?
100% of the money received will go to benefit the Trisomy 21 Program at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). Over the past six years, we have raised an impressive $51,621 to benefit various programs for CHOP!!
What is the Trisomy 21 Program at CHOP?
The Trisomy 21 Program at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia evaluates, treats and provides coordinated multidisciplinary care for children and adults with trisomy 21 — also known as Down syndrome. The program was founded in 2003 and takes care of the emotional, behavioral, developmental, and neurologic needs of children and adults who have been diagnosed with Trisomy 21. The Trisomy 21 Program provides a holistic multidisciplinary healthcare support system for patients with Down syndrome and their families. They also provide prenatal consultation for expectant parents to learn more about Trisomy 21.
What is Trisomy 21?
Trisomy 21, also known as Down Syndrome is a genetic disorder in which a baby is born with three copies of chromosome 21, rather than the typical two. It is caused by abnormal cell division in the development of the embryo. Trisomy 21 is common, with more than 200,000 cases in the United States each year (roughly 1 in 800 babies). Symptoms may include a distinct facial appearance, learning disabilities, and developmental delays. It can also lead to an increased risk of thyroid and heart disease. The severity of Trisomy 21 depends on the patient, but due to recent advances in medical technology the average life expectancy of a person with trisomy 21 is roughly 60 years, with many living well into their eighties.
